It's 2020, and Surprise! Rocket League is Still Fun

There’s something so simplistically entertaining about rocket cars. Like many kids, I had to have that RC car that I saw on TV. (For me, it was the Lightning McQueen RC, apropos my obsession with Cars at the time.) Having finally logged 35 hours on my own account (after dozens of hours spent on the consoles of friends) I can confidently say I'm finally getting the hang of it... If only a little behind the curve. The childish joy of hitting boost on a car and driving it like crazy never gets old, which is why Rocket League’s mechanics revolve around it. The simplicity of all of your controls being: drive, brake, jump, steer, and boost is genius. It’s this simplistic framework that keeps the game relevant. There isn’t a concern of the mechanics feeling “old”. While franchises like Call of Duty require annual iterations to keep it fresh, Rocket League has such a simple framework that updates are easy and simple to work with. Any content can be boiled down to cosmetics, battle pass, and game modes. Game modes which are ultimately just a variation of “put the ball in the thing”. There isn’t any massive engine complications, no need to worry about game balance or a meta. The skill and knowledge required to play the game is the same that it was on launch day. The simplistic joy of the game keeps people coming back, myself included, and the same way that football/soccer has been fun for years and years, Rocket League will continue to spark joy in our inner child.
